COMMUNICATE
How to Report an Emergency or Call for Assistance
POLICE/FIRE/AMBULANCE services ON CAMPUS:
- Call MIT Police at 617-253-1212 (or dial 100 from an MIT phone)
POLICE/FIRE/AMBULANCE services OFF CAMPUS:
- Call 911
How to Stay Informed During a Major Emergency
- Await MIT Alert messages (text, email, voicemail) for info on the emergency: type; location; and response actions
- Monitor emergency.mit.net for more info and updates

EVACUATE
If an unsafe situation occurs INSIDE your building:
Examples: fire, indoor hazardous materials spill
- Proceed safely to the nearest exit
- Do not use elevators
- If it is safe to do so, assist people who are unable to evacuate on their own
- Exit the building and stay clear of the area
- Wait for the “all clear”
SHELTER-IN-PLACE
If an unsafe situation occurs OUTSIDE your building:
Examples: tornado, earthquake, outdoor hazardous materials spill
- Move to an interior space, away from windows
- For severe weather, move to the lowest floor possible
- If it is safe to do so, assist people who are unable to shelter on their own
- Wait for the “all clear”
RUN, HIDE, FIGHT
If an active shooter or violent intruder situation occurs:
- RUN: if you are able to do so safely, get away from the attacker.
- HIDE: if you can’t run away, shelter-in-place (close and lock all windows and doors and silence all electronics).
- FIGHT: If you can’t run or hide, and as a last resort, attempt to counter attacker using any means available.
